ClassifyIt is a design framework for developing interactive classification systems. The deliverable is a complete system for assigning a classification code based on a set of user-selected criteria. The classification subject can be a physical object or an abstraction.

Based on the designer’s input, the framework constructs a translation layer between the classification subject and a coding guide. A checklist-style user interface (UI) is dynamically generated. ClassifyIt uses a scoring model to analyze the checklist responses and displays further instructions if more information is needed, a not-found message if all possibilities have been exhausted, or returns the classification code if successful. A historical record of the classification is warehoused.

ClassifyIt is a smart database (built in Microsoft SQL Server®) supporting two different applications — one for design and administration, and the other for the classification process:

ClassifyIt

The design/admin application is used to define and organize classification content for a particular subject area, including the physical or conceptual things that will be classified, the categories they belong to, and the criteria that qualify them. The designer specifies criteria priorities, Q&A sequence, classification scope, and other visualization options. The administrator has control over user

levels, permissions, verification rules, and other settings. The design/admin application currently runs only in Microsoft Access®.

The classification application guides the user through the entire process. Once a category has been selected, the checklist is dynamically configured based on the design parameters and presented to the user only with relevant questions or criteria revealed. As selections are made, the software closes in on the correct classification

or prompts the user for additional information. In cases where a decision can’t be made, the user may be given another suggested path to take. Once a successful outcome is reached, the classification is saved along with pertinent tracking data. Classifications can be reviewed and verified by authorized personnel. Classification history can be viewed, sorted, filtered, and reported. The classification application currently runs in Microsoft Access® and is being adapted to the web.
